Welcome to Roanoke Refuge

Outpatient treatment built for the Roanoke Valley.

Addiction consumes the entire family, but recovery heals the entire family. Roanoke Refuge is a licensed outpatient addiction treatment center in Roanoke, Virginia, offering Partial Hospitalization (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) programs for adults navigating substance use disorder.

Our clients live at home or in supportive recovery housing while attending treatment during the day, returning each evening to the relationships, responsibilities, and triggers that recovery has to hold up to over time. That is the central clinical choice of outpatient care, and it is the right choice for many of the families we serve in this valley.

What Happens When You Call

From the first phone call to your first day of treatment.

The path in is predictable. Here is exactly what happens once you reach out.

01

Call us

A short, confidential conversation with our admissions team. No commitment, no script, no pressure. The first call is just a conversation about what you are facing.

02

Talk through fit and insurance

We walk through the clinical picture together — current substance use, mental health, medical, and family context — and identify whether PHP or IOP is the right starting level. Insurance coverage is reviewed in the same conversation.

03

Schedule the clinical assessment

A 60- to 90-minute in-person assessment with a licensed clinician. This is the appointment where the formal treatment plan starts to take shape.

04

Begin care with a plan

PHP or IOP begins with a clear individualized plan, a primary therapist, and a path through aftercare. Detox is coordinated off-site with partner providers when needed before programming begins.

Insurance Coverage

Find out what is covered before you decide.

Most major commercial plans and Virginia Medicaid cover outpatient care. A 15- to 30-minute call with our admissions team walks you through what your specific plan covers. No commitment.

Why Roanoke Refuge

The difference between processing patients and treating them.

There is a meaningful difference between a program that processes patients and one that actually treats them. Here is what makes ours different.

  • Individualized care

Every treatment plan is built around the client's specific history, goals, and clinical needs, not a one-size-fits-all curriculum.

  • Licensed clinical staff

The clinical team brings real depth of experience in addiction medicine, trauma-informed care, and co-occurring mental health treatment.

  • Evidence-based therapies

CBT to rewrite the thought patterns that drove the using. DBT to build distress tolerance. Motivational Interviewing for ambivalence. Trauma-informed care across the entire program.

  • Locally rooted

We understand the substance use landscape, community resources, and recovery ecosystem of the Roanoke Valley. We are not a national chain.

  • Transparent admissions

Free, confidential insurance verification. Clear cost communication. No pressure to commit before the family has the information it needs.

Frequently Asked

The questions families ask most.

If your question is not here, that is exactly why our admissions line exists. Call when you are ready.

Is Roanoke Refuge inpatient or outpatient?

Outpatient. We offer Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Clients live at home or in supportive recovery housing and attend treatment during the day.

Does Roanoke Refuge provide medical detox?

No. Medical detox is not provided on-site. When a client needs detox before beginning outpatient treatment, our admissions team coordinates the off-site detox referral with local partner providers, and the client then enters PHP or IOP once medically stable.

Does Roanoke Refuge prescribe MAT?

Yes. Roanoke Refuge prescribes FDA-approved MAT medications on-site, including Suboxone and buprenorphine. Methadone, which by federal law is dispensed only through certified Opioid Treatment Programs, is coordinated with community OTPs for clients best served by that option.

How do I know whether PHP or IOP is right for me?

The clinical team uses ASAM criteria during the admissions assessment to recommend the right level of care. The recommendation takes into account substance use history, co-occurring mental health conditions, living environment, work and family obligations, and medical history. The right level may also change across treatment.
